Recirc Energy was commissioned by AECOM to deliver a RIBA Stage 2 feasibility study and reference design for sewer source heat recovery as part of the Trafford Civic Quarter District Heat Network, under DESNZ’s Advanced Zoning Programme. Drawing on a 12-month sewer monitoring programme, Recirc developed a data-led energy model, technology appraisal, and investment-ready concept design. The study demonstrated that heat recovered from a major trunk sewer could reliably supply around 80% of total district heat demand, delivering up to 37.5 GWh per year at a modelled SCOP of 3.1. The outputs directly supported the successful award of £5.7 million in Green Heat Network Fund support.
